Professional background

Locaweb November 2007 - current

Locaweb is largest web hosting company in Latin America and has other services such as e-mail, VoIP and SaaS applications.

I started working in the Applications team, developing satellite applications for the hosting platform such as streaming media services, Urchin-based web stats, hosting reselling among others.

On July 2008, I joined the E-mail Architecture team to work on the full stack for a new mail platform based on a third-party proprietary mail server and Locaweb systems to provide custom business logic and frontends for customers. The development of this platform took a 6 months year to get to production and we used Java, PHP and C. It currently handles 500.000+ accounts and is the default platform for new customers, providing additional features as mobile phone sync, calendaring, instant messaging and others. I spent another year adding features to the platform and supporting the system operation before the company decided to split the developer and system administrator careers and let only system administrators handle production systems.

In the last couple of months, I'm working on replacing Locaweb's legacy mail platform that handles 1.7+ million accounts to increase it's scalability and availability.

This legacy system is written using Perl, PHP and C backed by a MySQL cluster and is being replaced by systems written in Pyhon, C, 2 domain specific languages, Ruby and Go. This new system will also make use of more distributed databases like local instances of MongoDB and BDB generated from the central MySQL cluster and make extensive use of Memcached. All work is done very close to the system administrators that are assembling the architecture and run the current system in production.

Media Contacts Brazil November 2005 - November 2007

Media Contacts is Havas Media's (Havas group) interactive agency that provides media-focused marketing solutions across all digital and direct response channels.

I started at Media Contacts working for the technology department that was responsible for developing advertisement solutions based on creative work, specially sites and small web applications.

Soon I started to work with other areas to develop tools for optimizing their tasks such as reporting automation tools, databases and Search Engine Marketing campaign creation, management and reporting tools covering Google AdWords and Yahoo! Panama platforms.

Concurrently I started working with technologies the company hadn't worked with before such as Geomashups, desktop widgets/gadgets etc and I was later given responsibility for a new department: Research & Development. This department has the mission of coming up with new technology-based products and innovations and had 3 people working in it.

Me & my team kept working on internal productivity tools and we developed many professional and personal relations with the teams in offices on other countries, specially Spain, USA and UK.

I was also a member of the company's Global Technology Team, responsible for internal collaboration tools (internal blog, wiki etc) and helped the development of the company's lead product on media insight and reporting tool: Artemis.

hardMOB January 2002 - April 2007

Veritel Teleinformática November 1998 to July 1999

Veritel was an investor focused data service company. Offering its clients relevant information from several markets such as agriculture, cattle among others.

At Veritel I've worked as a system and network administrator, managing Solaris and Linux servers and their integration with a windows client network.
